He was born at the Varian House in New York City; was a gardener on the farm on Bloomingdale Road near 26th Street in 1835 and 6th Ave. near 27th, 1829-1847. About 1847, he moved to Westchester, about a mile from the town, on the road to Fordham until about 1860. He then sold it to the Roman Catholics where they built a "Protectory" for reclaimation of juveniles in their education in industrial and religious matters.
