John was born in Niederbarr, Germany in 1821, the son of Johann Peter Pitzen and
Anna Maria Freund. He married Anna Maria Schumacher on 20 November 1848 at
St John the Baptist Catholic Church, in Johnsburg, McHenry County, Illinois. They had ten children, Peter, Maria, Margaretha, John Joseph, Nicholas, Margaretha, Mathias, Susanna, Kathryn and Peter.
