Marietta King, 97, widow of Stephen King, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Flora Bottomley of Sebewa at 7:30 o'clock Tuesday evening, after a two weeks' illness.
Mrs. King was born in New York state and would have celebrated her 98th birthday March 27. She was one of the oldest settlers of Sebewa township coming here from New York state soon after her marriage and operating a general store in Sunfield later transferring to Lyons then to Crystal where Mr. King died.
Mrs. King was a life member of Sunfield Rebekahs and a member of the Congregational church at Sunfield.
She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Luella Ross of Lansing and Mrs. Flora Bottomley of Sebewa, five grandchildren, a number of great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be held from the Bera Mates funeral home Sunfield, at 2:30 o'clock Thursday, and burial in Lyons.

The grand old lady of Sebewa Mrs. Marietta King passed away Tuesday at the home of her daughter Mrs. Flora Bottomley in Sebewa. Had Mrs. King lived till the 29th of this month she would have been 98 years old.
Mrs. King had received many honors in her later years by the Daughters of the American Revolution. She had many friends who loved her dearly and she was always invited to social functions in the vicinity. Quite often she took part giving readings from memory, and in other ways adding to the occasion.
The funeral will be held in Sunfield, Thursday afternoon, conducted by previous arrangement by herself, by the Mapes undertakers. Rev. C. N. Stormes of the Lake Odessa United Brethren church will officiate.
Burial will be at Lyons beside her husband.
Mrs. Marietta King was born on March 27, 1839, at Gaines, N. Y. Her father died when she was seven years old, leaving a family of eight children.
At that time she went to live with a well-to-do farmer, John Proctor, near there, until her marriage to Stephen M. King on April 17, 1859.
He enlisted in the Civil war and his wife was left virtually penniless to care for a baby daughter. He came home on a furlough and when he returned to the front he was stationed with a different company and his name was not properly recorded, so he did not receive his honorable discharge. Mrs. King has been unable to get a widow's pension for this reason.
In 1865 they moved to Lansing and built a home. In 1870 they moved to Lyons, and King street in that village is named for Mr. King. Later they moved to Muir where they conducted a drug store for 12 years. The remainder of their lives was spent mostly in Ionia county.
Mr. King died on April 18, 1920, the day following their 61st wedding anniversary. Since his death Mrs. King resided with her daughter Mrs. Flora Bottomley in Sebewa.
She was the "youngest old lady" for many miles around, very active in the daily household duties and for the last 15 years she had her "second eyesight," reading her daily paper and writing her letters without glasses.
She was a great favorite with her friends and neighbors in both Sebewa and Odessa townships. Of a sunny disposition she won the hearts of the people she came in contact with. She was only ill two weeks prior to her death.

The daughters are Mrs. Luella Ross in Lansing, Mrs. Etta Green, who lived in Panama until her death two years ago, and Mrs. Flora Bottomley in Sebewa.
