UXBRIDGE / WILLIAMSTOWN Ellis M. Burgess Sr., 74, Williamstown, formerly of Uxbridge died Wed. May 21, 2008 in the Rhode Island Hospital, Providence, RI. He was the husband of Beatrice E. (Palmer) Burgess.

Mr. Burgess had been employed at Northrop Corp. in Norwood for 12 years before his retirement in 1996. He had previously been employed at the former Whitin Machine works in Whitinsville.

Mr. Burgess was born Jan. 27, 1934 in Woonsocket, RI the son of the late Elton L. and Myrtle (Jencks) Burgess. He was a lifelong resident of Uxbridge before moving to Williamstown 5 years ago. Mr. Burgess attended Millville schools and the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence. Mr. Burgess was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean War.

Mr. & Mrs. Burgess observed their 50th wedding anniversary on Sept. 8, 2007. For more than 25 years, they raised many foster children in their home. Mr. Burgess was a former member of the Uxbridge Baptist Church. He was an avid trumpet player in various churches and local bands. He enjoyed carpentry.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by five sons; Ellis M. and his wife Laura Burgess of Uxbridge, Jeffrey R. and his wife Karen Burgess of Whitinsville, Scott A. and his wife Kimberly Burgess of Douglas, Brian E. Burgess of PA. Nicholas D. Burgess of RI; five daughters; Debra A. and her husband Robert Grazulis of Whitinsville, Donna B. and her husband Stephen Narey of Williamstown, Darlene M. and her husband John Dillon of RI., Doreen J. and her husband John Dow of NH, Crystal B. and her husband Manuel Carvalho of CT., one brother; David L. Burgess of Uxbridge, one sister; Gail Buelher of Uxbridge 28 grandchildren 2 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by two sons; Michael J. Burgess and Timothy J. Burgess and one brother; George Burham.

Funeral services with Full Military Honors will be held Sat. May 24, 2008 at 10 AM in the North Uxbridge Baptist Church, 5 East Hartford Ave., North Uxbridge. Interment will follow in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Mendon St. (Rt. 16), Uxbridge.

Visiting hours will be Fri. May 23, 2008 from 5-8 PM in the BUMA FUNERAL HOME, 101 No. Main St. (Rt. 122), Uxbridge, MA 01569.

Donations may be made to the Berkshire County, ARC Down's Syndrome Family Group, 395 South St. Pittsfield, MA 01201.
