Born in Richmond county, N. C., July 7, 1813. Died November 14, 1889, aged 76 years, 4 months and 7 days.
Henry Moorman was the son of Tarlton and Hannah (Way) Moorman, the former a native of North Carolina and the latter of South Carolina. Tarlton Moorman came to Randolph county, Ind., in 1816 with $150, being his entire worldly wealth. With this he purchased land and lived the life of a farmer, dying at the ripe old age of ninety-three years, his estate being worth about $40,000. Henry Moorman was married March 17, 1836, to Ann, daughter of William and Fanny (Creros) Diggs, who came from Anson county, N. C. Mr. Moorman was a successful farmer and lived on a farm in Randolph county, Ind., until 1869, when he purchased a farm in New Garden township, where he resided until 1884, when he came to Fountain City, where he resided until his death. Mrs. Moorman, his wife, died February 18, 1872.
Of the four children born to Henry and Ann Moorman, but one, Rebecca, is now living, and who is unmarried, and who was the most devoted daughter to her invalid father, who for ten or fifteen years before his death required almost constant attention, and it is and has been a matter of universal knowledge that no one could have been more faithful to her duty than was this daughter to her father. In this respect it becomes a pleasant as well as an unpleasant duty to correct a mistake which in some way was published in one of our county papers. It was published that Mr. Moorman died leaving a will which disinherited his daughter, because of her marriage against his wishes. This was an unpleasant mistake, Miss Moorman was never married, and his entire estate estimated at fifty to seventy-five thousand dollars goes to the daughter.
Mr. Moorman was a consistent and faithful member of the Friends church all his life, and was a liberal giver to all charitable and worthy objects. A few months before his death he and his daughter gave ten thousand dollars to Earlham College, and it is understood that in his will he made many bequests for charitable works.
