- Basma Kamel Kaldas
- Born 14 January, 1937 in Assiut, Egypt to the late Kamel Elzik and Linda Louka Elzik, she died 13 October, 2011 in Cumming, Georgia. She was a resident of Charlotte, NC and was preceded in death by her devoted husband of 48 years Samir Naguib Kaldas six months earlier. Her efforts as a loving mother of courage on behalf of her family by taking 'the road less traveled by' were formative for herself and the family, and 'have made all the difference' as her favorite poet Robert Frost expressed it. She was most happy spending time with her husband and two sons, and reading her bible. She was an active member of Avondale Presbyterian Church for over 25 years.
- Basma was a life-long educator, graduating from Ein Shams University, Cairo, Egypt in 1957 with a degree in English, she went on to teach English literature to middle school students as her first job after immigrating and settling in Charlotte. She received a Masters Degree in Special Education from Winthrop College, Rock Hill and taught first at St. Ann's Catholic School then at Sharon Elementary School for the majority of her 40-year teaching career. She made it a point to teach those most difficult to teach, without sparing an effort as was her nature as a woman of conviction and values. Her legacy will always be the lives of her sons whom she taught the value of knowledge, and the fulfilled potential of her less advantaged students for which she labored tirelessly.
Having retired from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, she and Samir spent a decade living in Southern California satisfying there pioneering spirits, only to return to North Carolina to the 'good Christian land' that drew them as unlikely Egyptian emigres to 1970 Charlotte. Here she spent her later years amongst friends and a tight-knit Christian Orthodox Community of St. Mark's Coptic Orthodox Church, of which Basma and Samir were founding members.
Basma is survived by two grateful sons, Magid Kaldas and wife Loraine of Cumming, GA, and Rami Kaldas and wife Ines of Neenah, WI. She was grandmother to three grandchildren: Evea Kaldas, Andrew Kaldas, and Louis Kaldas and is also survived by four siblings: Samira Stefanos of Redlands, CA, Wafia Rizk, MD of Pittsburg,PA, Tahani Elzik, MD of Assiut, Egypt, and Ekram Elzik, MD of Laguna Niguel, CA.
'Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord for ever,' as she taught her boys, and Basma will.
- Funeral Services are at St. Mark's Coptic Orthodox Church at 101 Shasta Lane at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, October 15, 2011, Burial to follow at Sharon Memorial Park. Arrangements are by McEwen Funeral Service at Sharon, 5716 Monroe Road, Charlotte, NC 28212.
