His parents:
father David Denton Scoggin 1814-1900 and mother unknown name but she was born in Tennessee between 1820-1825 (1840 census). No record of his father's first marriage was found. She died in about 1848 in Missouri (possibly Haw Creek Twp, Morgan Co.).
His half-sister Fannie Scoggin Pendleton said Thomas went off to the (Civil) war from Texas. A Thomas J. Scoggins listed in ancestry.com US Civil War Solders, 1861-1865 in Confederate Army, 6th Texas Cavalry (Wharton, Stone's), Private in Company C. This could be our Thomas J. Scoggin. His tombstone has the Mason symbol engraved upon it.
