George Tompkins was born April 6, 1876 in Buckhamshire, England the son of Agnes (Hawkins) and James Tompkins. In 1891 at the age of 14 he came to the United States and Branch County, thereafter his home.

George enlisted with Company A, of the 32nd Michigan Regiment, June 25, 1898, in Coldwater for service in the Spanish-American War.

He married Bernice Peppiatt in Ellsworth, Kansas in 1906. It was that year that they made their home at the Indian Point Farm at Coldwater Lake. Four sons were born to this marriage: Lloyd George, Carroll, John, and Donald.

George Tompkins was 76 years of age when he died at his Ovid Township farm home on October 7, 1952.
