Bernice Peppiatt was born February 15, 1883 in Ovid Township to Ella (Quimby) and Joseph Peppiatt. The Peppiatt family originally came from New York before moving to Coldwater, and later to Ellsworth County, Kansas. Bernice was the second oldest of nine children. As a young lady, Bernice left the family farm in Kansas and returned to Coldwater.

On August 6, 1906, in Ellsworth, Kansas, she married George Tompkins of Coldwater. Returning to Coldwater after the marriage, they made their home on a farm at Indian Point at Coldwater Lake. Sons Donald, Caroll, Lloyd, and John were born to this marriage.

September 26, 1958 while walking near her home, she was struck by an automobile and died of injuries suffered in the accident.
