John E Gerrish was the 3rd child and second son of Samuel Gerrish and Mary Jane Wallace. He was born in Houlton, Aroostook, Maine. Like his father, he was a farmer.

John served his country during the Civil War (1861-1865) in Company G, 9th Infantry Regiment as a Private.
On the 08 Jul 1867, John married Hannah L. Gardner. Hannah was the daughter of George Washington Gardner and Tabitha Roberts. They were the parents of 5 children, Maud (1870-1949), Jesse (1875-1940), May Viola (1878-1898), Addie (1880-1933) and Owen Theodore (1890-1964).

On the 1870 and 1880 U.S. Census, John, Hannah and their children are living on a farm in Dyer Brook. It was here that John passed away on 03 Jan 1894. He was buried in Dyer Brook Cemetery near other members of his Gerrish family.

Enlisted in the UNITED STATES UNION ARMY - Civil War - Company G, 9th Infantry Regiment as a Private. Wounded on 11 July 1863. Promoted to full Corporal in 1864. Mustered out on 13 July 1865
