He coached boxing at Harvard for decades until he was well into his 90s. For more than 30 years he refereed boxing matches and was a member of the Massachusetts State Boxing Commission for over 20 years until he stepped down in 1993. He estimated that he refereed more than 9,000 boxing matches, often officiating as many as 22 amateur bouts in one night.
