Otto came from Poland (Danzig Corridor). He worked in the coal mine district there (and later in Illinois after arriving in the U.S.). He was also a truck farmer in Poland and a truck farmer around the Black Jack area. He would sell his produce in St. Louis. He married Anna Maria Piemann in Germany. They had three children: Louisa Anna Rehpohl Ohnemus), William Otto and Otto Henry.

Per information provided by Lynn Marie Vint, Otto's cause of death was noted in Salem Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery Florissant, St. Louis County church records as lung problems.
