According to The Stevens Point Daily Journal (3/27/1880), Neil was "cutting cattle feed with a horse-power machine" when his right hand got caught in the machine, and was nearly severed from his arm. Eventually, the arm was amputated, but it didn't save his life. Neil passed away, two days later, on 3/29/1880.
