Bill Ellis was the son of Isaac Ellis, Sr. and Lala Lee Ellis. He was born on a farm in Heath Creek township, near Hughesville, Pettis county, Missouri. His parents had three children, Juanita, Genelle and Isaac Jr. whom they called Billy. When Bill was nine months old his mother left the family feeling burdened with three small children. Eventually Ike divorced her and he never married.
Bill's father's cousin Mary Clara Lively Ellis McMullin, a widow who had no children of her own, took Bill and raised him as her son. Bill always called her Aunt Lively.
Bill served in the U. S. Army. He enlisted three times:
enlisted Dec. 19, 1945, released Dec. 27, 1946
enlisted Sept. 18, 1947, released Sept. 23, 1949
enlisted again May 18, 1951, released Aug. 31, 1954
He was married three times and had three daughters.
