Novelist and Screenwriter. With an early interest in film, he worked initially as a journalist. Around 1929, he served a short stint in Hollywood in the United States to serve as a movie correspondent for German newspapers. He had a bit part in "All Quiet on the Western Front." Once back in Berlin, he began to work with the film industry as an assistant producer on "Seitensprunge." He began to write screenplays, and assist with others. Given the growing anti-Semitic atmosphere in Germany, he, his wife and daughter emigrated to the United States in 1936. He immediately began to adapt and write for the movies. Over the next thirty-five years, he would contribute to over nineteen films. He would receive an Academy Award nomination for the 1938 comedy "Mad About Music." His daughter Kathy, would relate stories from Malibu Beach to him which inspired his best selling book, "Gidget" in 1950. The book would be adapted for several movies and into a television series.
