John was one of fourteen children born to Walter Turner and his wife, Lydia Ballinger. He married Mary Lucas, a daughter of Abraham Lucas and his wife, Marcy Kelsey. The wedding took place on February 23, 1815 in Clinton County, Ohio. They had twelve children; eight sons and five daughters.
