Joseph Rudd was possibly born in Bourton-on-the-Water, Gloucestershire, England about 1750. His parents names and exact place of birth are unknown to me at this time.

According to Bourton-on-the Water Parish Records for St. Lawrence Church, JOSEPH RUDD & ELIZABETH SLATTER obtained a license of marriage on 07 August 1785. Elisabeth Slatter was born 22 February 1725 and baptized on 2 March 1752 in Bourton On The Water. Her parents were John and Elizabeth Slatter.

In 1786, a year after they married, their first child, a son, was born. His name was Richard L. Rudd (1786-1852). In August of 1788 another son was baptized. They named him Joseph Rudd Jr. I have not found any death or burial records for him, and he was not mentioned in his fathers Will in 1810. That leads me to believe that he more than likely died as an infant. They also had a daughter, Elizabeth Rudd. She was baptized in the parish church in Bourton On The Water on 2 August 1794. In 1810, she is mentioned in her father's Will using the surname "Rudd", indicating a single woman. A Burial Record for ELIZABETH RUDD in the parish records of the Bourton On The Water's Parish Church, indicates that she was buried on 31 Mar 1812. Therefore, she did not immigrate to the USA with her brother Richard and his family, when they departed England about 1815.

Joseph Rudd was a "Miller" and "Baker" of Burton-on-the-Water, and we know this because it is recorded in his Will, along with various other newspaper clippings. I also have another document, written by historian and genealogist Issac John Greenwood, who wrote a biography of Joseph Rudd's youngest grandson, George Rudd, stating that Joseph Rudd was the "Miller" and "Malster" of Bourton-on-the-Water.

On April 17, 1810, the Will of JOSEPH RUDD was drawn up four days previous to his decease, and proved October 31st following, in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury, Doctors Commons, London. It mentions his two children; Richard, whom he appoints executor, and Elizabeth (daughter), also his sister-in-law, Mary Rudd, widow.

Joseph Rudd, Miller of Bourton, was buried in the churchyard of St. Lawrence Church, Bourton-on-the-Water, Gloucestershire, England, after his decease on April 21, 1810. I have asked a Find A Grave Photo Volunteer to take a picture of his tombstone if one exists, but to date, no one has provided a picture.

Upon Joseph's death, his son Richard L. Rudd assumed his duties as Miller, Baker, and Malster of Bourton-on-the Water, and did so until about 1815. In 1815, Richard L. Rudd, along with his wife, 3 sons, and 1 daughter, immigrated to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, never to return to their motherland of England again.

One thought: Joseph's son Richard, always used the middle initial "L". One of Richards sons was named Richard "Lawrence" Rudd, and he named his farm in Connecticut, USA, "Richard Lawrence Farms". He also named his son, Richard "Lawrence" Rudd Jr. . Another grandson was named Theodore "L" Rudd. I surmise that the "L" stood for "Lawrence". I am also surmising, by saying that "Lawrence" was given to them as a middle name, as an honor to the parish church of St. Lawrence, in Bourton-on-the-Water, Gloucestershire, England.

The above information was researched, written, and compiled by BBP, Joseph's 5th Great Granddaughter. (Updated December 2, 2023)
