During 1920 1921, Gold was a national handball champion and in 1923, was named the second best basketball forward in the country, later becoming captain of the All American team. He moved to Los Angeles in 1910. While filming the final scenes for “Such Men are Dangerous,” two motion pictures planes were flying over the Pacific near Santa Monica when their wing tips met and the planes swung together, burst into flames and fell into the ocean. Witnesses on the beach said they saw three people thrown from the wreckage before it exploded. Among those killed were Gold, Mary Astor’s husband Kenneth Hawks who was a director, cameramen George Eastman, Conrad Wells, Otho Jordan and Ben Frankel, two property men, the captain and an army reserve flier. Assistant director on four films.
