B. J. DUNWIDDIE, FORMER MAYOR, DIES

MONROE - Brooks J. Dunwiddie, 75, former three-term mayor of Monroe in the 1950s and long a business and civic leader here, died Tuesday night in a Colorado Springs, Colorado hospital. He had moved to Colorado Springs several years ago to live with his sister, Miss Mary Dunwiddie, who survives him.

Mr. Dunwiddie was first elected mayor here in 1952 and was re-elected in 1954 and 1956. His father, the late William Dunwiddie, was a former Monroe city clerk for many years.

Brooks Dunwiddie was in the abstract business here beginning in 1911. In 1916 he bought the Dunwiddie and Son Abstract Co. from his father, who had founded the business in 1897.

He was active in the Greenwood Cemetery Association following his election as trustee in 1940, and served as its president for a number of years beginning in 1945. He also served as secretary of the Green County Fair for five years, and headed the county rationing board for more than a year during World War II.

Brooks Dunwiddie became a member of the newly formed city planning commission in 1938. He was elected a director of the Monroe Building and Loan Association in 1923, and continued on the board until it dissolved.

Mr. Dunwiddie was a native of Cass County, Iowa. His father, a native of Monroe, moved back here with his family in 1894.

Mrs. Dunwiddie, the former Emma Marty, died in 1933.

Mr. Dunwiddie's body was to be returned to the Shriner-Neushwander funeral home for arrangements.
