U.S. Congressman, U.S. Senator. He graduated from Harvard College in 1766 and became a successful merchant. He was a member of the Massachusetts State House of Representatives, (1780-82), a member of the Massachusetts State Senate, (1783, 86-88) and a member of the Massachusetts State constitutional convention, (1779-80). In 1789, he was elected to the First Congress and to the next three succeeding Congresses, serving until 1796. After his term, he was elected as a Federalist to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of George Cabot in 1796 and served until his resignation in 1800. He then lived in retirement until death at age 65.
