Persis Cleveland, the seventh child of Benjamin and Rachel Cleveland, was born in Canterbury, CT, Jan. 18, 1752. She married in Pomfret, CT, in 1772, Edward Payne, son of Edward and Lois (Kinney) Payne. He was b. in Pomfret, CT, June 10, 1750; died in Montague, MA June 19, 1845. Farmer. She died in same place, March 30, 1884.

They had a family of eleven children, as follows:
1. James, born Dec. 18, 1774; died April 29, 1834.
2. Edward, born Oct. 2, 1776; died Aug. 24, 1866.
3. Lois, born May 22, 1778; died Jan. 13, 1809.
4. Lebbeus, born March 1, 1780; died Dec. 5, 1782.
5. Alvin, born Jan. 19, 1782; died Dec 11, 1843.
6. Lebbeus, (again), born Dec. 1, 1783; died July 28, 1844.
7. Persis, born Oct. 1, 1785; died Feb. 1, 1857.
8. Oren, born June 1, 1787; died Sept. 21, 1873.
9. John, (Dr.), born July 1, 1789; died March 16, 1873.
10. Seril, born April 28, 1791; died Oct. 20, 1829, unm.
11. Ira, born Sept. 29, 1793; died May 8, 1873.

Persis Cleveland, was of small stature, fair complexion, raven black hair and black eyes. She was very ambitious, with no dower except her beauty, and her marriage into one of the aristocratic families of Connecticut was bitterly opposed by some of her husband's relatives. She was a devoted wife and mother, though somewhat fretful as she grew in years; aided her husband to acquire a handsome property, and reared a large family to habits of energetic industry.

She and her husband were buried in the old cemetery some distance from the village, in the eastern part of the township.
