Robert was born in Salt Lake City, UT to Leo and Josephine Bates on June 12, 1956. He found peace on a beautiful fall day in October 2011.

Rob grew up in Salt Lake City and graduated from South High School. He worked for the Utah State Dept. of Education for many years.

Rob loved the outdoors and spent much of his time fishing, hunting, and camping with his dogs, Shooter and Annie. Rob had a heart of gold.

He is survived by his sister, Kathy (Gill) Sorensen, brothers, John Bates and Gary Bates, his Aunt La Preal Lublin who loved and cared for him like a son, his nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Preceded in death by his parents, and brothers Norman, Marvin, and Keith Bates.

Graveside services will be held on Monday, November 7, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. in the Murray City Cemetery, 5490 South Vine Street (730 East), Murray, Utah.
