Susie Alice Smart, 99, of Amarillo died Oct. 14, 2003, in Amarillo.
She was born in Clarendon, Texas on July 17, 1904 to Maggie and William Johnston. they moved to Tucumcari in 1908, along with her six brothers, Frank, Sam, Jack, Robert, Homer and Milton Johnston. Mrs. Smart went to grade school in Tucumcari and attended high school in Texoma. She married John Wood in 1923. They had two sons, William J. and Robert C. Wood. After the death of Mr. Wood she married Robert Ernest Smart in 1933 and they had a daughter Betty Laverne Smart and son, Ben Rufus Smart. Mrs. Smart Moved to Amarillo and lived for 22 years at Winwood Village Retirement Home. She then moved to Integrated Health Services Nursing Home in 1999.
Mrs. Smart is preceded in death by her six brothers, two sons, William J. Wood and Robert C. Wood and grandson Lynn Dugger.
Survivors include Betty Laverne Dugger and husband Eddie of Amarillo; son, Ben R. Smart and wife Sharon of Amarillo; daughter-in-law, Ruby Wood of Tucumcari; sisters-in-law, Nellie Johnston of Tucumcari, Verneece Ballew of Tucumcari, Genell Carver of Bloomfield, Mildred Smart of Tucumcari, Alma Smart of Gila; eight grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and several great and great great grandchildren.
Services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday in Tucumcari Memorial Cemetery.
