His given birth name was Vandrick Brookshire, born 1831, South Carolina
He relocated to McMinn County, TN., where he married his first wife, Mary, (1826-1859).
They were married on December 20, 1849 in McMinn County, Tn. They had no children.

He moved to Murray County, GA., when he married his second wife, Frances, on March 21, 1861. Their only child, George Bartow Brookshire, (1862-1940) was born on the family farm there.

Vardrey enlisted in the Confederate Army, along with his brothers-in-law and they served together in Vicksburg, Mississippi. Due to unsanitary conditions of the camp, he contracted an unknown, eventually fatal disease and was transferred to the Grand Hotel in Clear Point, Alabama. The hotel was utilized as a hospital for the numerous soldiers sent there from various battle sites.

Feb., 1862 until July, 1863 • Served in the Battle of Vicksburg (Mississippi)

According to an Affidavit by Frances M. Lemons Brookshire (his wife), Vandrey became sick in Vicksburg and after being paroled at the surrender of Vicksburg. He died in July, 1863 at hospital, Clear Point, Alabama.
