Bio:

Elizabeth, known as "Betsey", was born on the Little Calf Pasture in Augusta County, Virginia, the first-born child of Joseph Robert McCutcheon and Nancy Youell McCutcheon;

Granddaughter of John McCutcheon and Elizabeth "Betsey" Hodge McCutcheon and of William Youell and Elizabeth Nelson Youell. (Grandfather William Youell came from Scotland; William was one of the early settlers in Augusta County/Rockbridge County and was one of the founders of the Lebanon Presbyterian Church; he fought in the Revolutionary War..... Grandfather John McCutcheon also fought in the Revolutionary War.)

Sister of Elinor "Ellen" McCutcheon (1st Husband, Robert Kerr Dunlap and 2nd Husband, John Firebaugh), Margaret Ann McCutcheon (Mrs. William Kunkle), William Youell McCutcheon (Wife, Catherine Ann Firebaugh McCutcheon), Charles Harmon McCutcheon (Wife, Sarah McCutcheon), John Harvey McCutcheon (who died at the age of 9 years on 1 September 1824) and Rachel McCutcheon (who died at the age of 7 years on 14 Aug 1824).

Betsey married Archibald Armstrong on November 23rd, 1824, when she was 18 years old; Husband Archibald was 27.

Betsey and Archibald are the parents of Joseph Armstrong, RACHEL ARMSTRONG (Mrs. RUSSELL NEWMAN WALLACE), William Armstrong (wife, Cynthia A. Hunter), Elizabeth "Lizzie" Armstrong, James Armstrong, Margaret Ann Armstrong (Mrs. William Kerr Wallace), Mary E. "Nancy" Armstrong (Mrs. John P. Cook and later, Mrs. James Lindsay), Archibald Thomas Armstrong (wife, Martha Jane "Mattie" Firebaugh) and Virginia Armstrong.

Betsey's Husband Archibald died in 1853; their youngest daughter, Virginia, died at the end of December in 1859 and Betsey buried her beside Archibald at the Old Lebanon Cemetery in Craigsville.

Son William took over the farming operations after Archibald died; Betsey continued to live with him until her death in 1864 at the age of 57.

She is buried at the Old Lebanon Cemetery in Craigsville with husband Archibald, her youngest daughter Virginia Armstrong, her Father-in-law William Augustus Armstrong (who died shortly after Archibald in 1853), Daughter Rachel Armstrong Wallace (who died in 1869), and Rachel's infant daughter Rachel Elizabeth Wallace (who also died in 1869); also buried near them are Betsey's grandson Billie Kerr Wallace, Jr. and granddaughter Bettie Alice Wallace and their father William Kerr Wallace (husband of Betsey's daughter Margaret Ann Armstrong Wallace).

Elizabeth "Betsey" McCutcheon Armstrong......Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Daughter, Granddaughter, Sister, Aunt, Niece, Cousin and Friend. She is lovingly remembered by the families who continue to tell the stories of those who came before us.

*Note: The Old Lebanon Cemetery had been overgrown with thick shrubbery and fallen trees and forgotten for many years; in the early 2000's some wonderful people, including Daley Craig, John Robert Wallace and other family members of those originally buried there, took on the task of restoring the cemetery and attempting to piece together what they could of the broken headstones. Many of the monuments had been partially buried, many others were beyond repair, and many had simply disintegrated. There are some stones remaining that either do not have any writing on them or the writing is so worn that it is no longer legible. Elizabeth's stone is one of these, although many of the family headstones are in good condition. We are so grateful to the wonderful, caring people who attempted such a project....they not only restored a cemetery, they restored the memories of our loved ones for future generations. THANK YOU!

(Elizabeth "Betsey" McCutcheon is my 3rd Great-Grandmother.)

**NOTE: To clear up any confusion.... The original Scottish name appears to be spelled as McCUTCHEON…. Many of the family records in the 1700's and the very early 1800's spelled the name various ways: McCutchen, McCutchan, McCutchin, some dropped the 'c', and many later spelled it as McCutcheon..... even though they were of the same family line.
