Born in Ireland, James Conroy came to America about 1843. He served in the Civil War as a corporal in Company A of the 5th Regiment of the Missouri State Militia Cavalry.
He married the widow Sarah (Byrne) O'Rourke in 1876. Some of his adult step children adopted his surname.

CONROY, James, d. Mar. 22, 1901 at the home of his adopted daughter at 26th and Mary streets, aged 87. He was from the Hurligen area and moved to St. Joseph Missouri a year ago. Services at Hurlingen Catholic Church and burial there.
