John, Jr.'s(John Baugh,III) birth and exact death dates are not known. He died between June 17, 1793 and November 24, 1794, He may have been born 1740-1750 (brother, James was born c. 1740). Chesterfield County was formed May 25, 1749 from Henrico County. John could have been born in Henrico County before the name change of that area his parents lived in. It is assumed that he died in 1794 since the first inventory (on Prince Edward property) begins Nov. 24, 1794. (I had previously put 1795, but did that from memory since I had lost the probate documents in a move and have now sent for them again and made correction)

John, Jr. did not have a Will. At his death, he had the Settlement of two estates. His father, John Baugh, Sr. died probably 1784 since the tax list says:John Baugh, Estate. His Will(see picture in left column) was written Sept. 29, 1784 and proved Aug. 11, 1785. He had left John, Jr. his tobacco plantation (196 acres) that he lived on in Manchester Parish, Chesterfield County, Va. that was son, John's after the death of his mother. His mother, Frances (Robertson) Baugh's Will (see left column) was written July 19, 1793 and proved Oct.22, 1795 (inventory of property) in Chesterfield County. She leaves John 900 lbs of tobacco, one feather bed, two sheets and a blanket, plus he gets the 196 acre farm where she is living left to him by his father.

His mother died, probably a few months or weeks before John and wife died. John owned a house in Prince Edward County where he and his family lived. He bought the Prince Edward house/property on June 17, 1793 from Thomas Gibson. It is believed that he and wife died in some sort of accident together in Prince Edward County a few months or one year after the purchase. They had ten children. The probate for both estates for John was in the Prince Edward Court. Inventory and sales on the Prince Edward Estate begins Nov. 24, 1794 and ends 19 Oct 1795 and on the tobacco plantation in Chesterfield County the inventory and sales ends on 19 April 1796. (very confusing and difficult to read documents). Daughters, Nancy and Priscilla bought some items from the estates, as well as, Thomas Trent. Probate papers for the two estates of John Baugh (Jr.) are listed in Will Index on the Library of Virginia website and can be ordered for $30.

Descendants seem to think John, Jr. was married to Phoebe Edwards, although no marriage or bond has been found for them. They were both from Chesterfield County. Not sure when ( 1768-1770 ?) or where they were married, but are not listed in Chesterfield or Prince Edward County Marriages/Bonds. The Chesterfield court house burned so the marriages start at 1771. Phoebe's brother-in-law, Thomas Trent of Buckingham County, married to her half- sister, Elizabeth, was appointed guardian for the children. Her father calls her Phebe Baugh in his Will. So most likely, Phoebe was married to John and the mother to his children.

Note: Not only did Frances, John, Jr. and Phoebe die in 1793-95, it seems that Gabriel Vest, husband of Frances' dau., Tabitha, also died 1795 ! Someone who worked with the records in Prince Edward County told a descendant who was researching this family that John and his wife, Phoebe Edwards died together in an accident. That was about 40 years ago. That information was passed to me from another descendant.

John's maternal grandparents: William Robertson (his Will, written, April 4, 1757, Chesterfield County, VA, proved May 5, 1758). William's wife, Frances/Francis Puckett Tanner was the widow of John Clyborn when he married her. William leaves to his daughter, Frances Baugh, a slave named Abraham and a horse. William's wife, Frances/Francis Puckett Tanner Robertson, also left a Will, (Francis Robertson)written March 7, 1768 and proved August 3, 1770(Book 2, page 171), at Chesterfield County. She names John Baugh (her son-in-law, married to dau. Frances) as one of several owing her money. These two Wills are on USGenweb (free), Virginia, Chesterfield Co. Note: on USGenweb, because her name was written as Francis, someone thinks her Will is a man's Will.

Please note that I previously had the year that Wm. Robertson wrote his Will as 1758 as the USGenWeb site had it. I checked with the book: Chesterfield County Virginia Wills, 1749-1774 by Benjamin B. Weisiger, III. It had 1757 as the year William wrote his Will. William listed his step-son, John Claiborne(Clyborn) as his son-in-law.
