POLICE CADET ALLAN D. MORTENSEN

A tall, hulking man who was affectionately known as "Lurch" among his co-workers, Police Cadet Allen Mortensen served the San Diego Police Department for approximately one year before he was drafted into the United States Army.
His conscription eventually led to him being sent to Vietnam. By that time Mortensen was a sergeant and a member of the elite Green Beret force.
On March 10, 1969, Sergeant Mortensen was leading a squad of soldiers through a rice field when an errant United States artillery round exploded near him. He was killed instantly.
Cadet Mortensen was 24 years old at the time of his death.
