Major General Sir Hugh Wheeler,KCB, a central figure in the Indian Mutiny or Sepoy Rebellion of 1857, was executed along with other survivors of the Sati Chowra massacre at Kanpur (Cawnpore). His final resting place is unknown, though his and his companions' remains may have been committed to the Ganges River.

Maj-General Wheeler is memorialized along with many hundreds of victims in All Souls Memorial Church in Central Kanpur, located at Albert and Mahatma Gandhi Roads.
