William Smith of Elsinore, was born in Kolding, Denmark, on March 10, 1848. In 1862 Mr. Smith, accompanied by his mother, came from their native land to America having been converted to the Mormon faith. They lived in Mt. Pleasant for a few months and then removed to Richfield where they remained for a few months. Mr. Smith was one who was sent in 1862 to settle the town of Elsinore, which place was his residence ever since up to the time of his death.
In 1866 he married Miss Caroline Jensen of Mt. Pleasant, who is still living. To them were born four boys and five girls, all are living except the oldest boy, died in mere infancy.
Mr. Smith was a staunch McKinley Republican, he held the position of Postmaster for eight years in his town and was Justice of the Peace at the time of his death. He was one of the prime movers in every circle in his town and all during his life held many public offices.
