Indian Mutiny Victoria Cross Recipient. A native of Ireland, he received the award from British Queen Victoria on November 9, 1860 at Windsor Castle in Windsor, Berkshire, England, for his actions as a private in the 1st Battalion, 60th Rifles, British Army, at Delhi, India on September 10, 1857 during the 1857 Indian Mutiny. Born in Carrabane, County Galway, Ireland, little is known about his life other than he served with the 60th Rifles in British India during the 1857 Indian Mutiny and won the Victoria Cross for gallantry. He died in Penzance, Cornwall, England at the age of 67. In addition to the Victoria Cross, he received the Indian Mutiny Medal (with Delhi clasp). His Victoria Cross citation reads: "For distinguished gallantry in heading a successful charge made by the Beeloochee and Seikh Troops on one of the Enemy's trenches before Delhi, on the 10th of September, 1857. He leaped out of our trenches, closely followed by the Native Troops, and was shot down from the top of the Enemy's breastworks. Elected by the Privates of the Regiment." The location of his medals is unknown.
