Addison was born in Bethel, Vermont to Benjamin Smith and Lois Chase, 3rd of 12 children. The story handed down in our family states that Addison and his younger brother Ransford came west to Kentucky around 1815 to 1820, after serving in the War of 1812.

In Christian County KY, they married sisters. Addison married Nancy Fitzgerald Hicks on 6 Dec 1821. (Ransford married Sallie Hicks in Jun 1823.) Addison and Nancy first moved to Bloomington, Indiana, then around 1831 or 1832 they moved to Shelbyville, Illinois where they raised their brood of 8 (or 9) girls and 1 boy. (I cannot find all of the girls' names.) Their 7 children living to adulthood were:

Lucia Russell mar Charles Dexter Lufkin
Sarah Jane mar Joshua L. Dexter
Elizabeth B. Never married
Dudley Chase Jr mar Mary Bernadine Orme
Kate H. mar Anthony Thornton III
Olivia Flynn mar 1)Col Sheridan Pitt Read and 2)John Purdy Craighead
Maria Nancy mar George Daniel Chafee.

The 1840 census indicates that one person in the family (Addison) was engaged in "Learned Professions and Engineers."

** To find the Smith family graves, you must enter the cemetery at the Central Ave entrance. Drive straight in and park at the circle (where there is a tree in the middle). Walk in as if continuing to drive straight through from the entrance. The graves are about 50 yards straight ahead, then down a slight slope to the right.
