Indian Mutiny Victoria Cross Medal Recipient. He served as Troop Sergeant Major in the 9th Lancers, British Army. On March 19, 1858, at Lucknow, India, Troop Sergeant Major with another soldier, attacked eight mutineers posted in a nullah and killed three of them. For conspicuous bravery, he was awarded the Victoria Cross Medal and promoted Regimental Sergeant Major.
