Indian Wars Medal of Honor Recipient. Born in England, he served as a Private in Company G, 1st U.S. Cavalry. At the Chiricahua Mountains, Arizona, on October 20, 1869, Cochise and the Apaches Indians had kidnapped a white settler child in order to draw soldiers of the 1st Cavalry, Company G, into a box canyon to ambush. A firefight ensued, Private Sumner went to the front position followed by fellow troopers and held off the attackers until they disappeared into the hills. For gallantry in a charge, he was awarded the Medal of Honor in February 1870.
