Author, poet, editor, religious reformer. In his lifetime, one of Sweden´s most admirered intellectual and cultural leaders. As an author he made great success with ”Den siste Atenaren” (1859) and ”Singoalla” (1857/1894). But he was also spending his professional life in religious research and as an editor, he frequently attacked the clergery and church, for instance challenging the church with denial of Christ´s divinity. In 1877 he became a member of ”The Eighteen”, The Swedish Academy (of Literature). The poem ”Tomten” ( The Leprechaun) is his most famous work. Cause of death: Diabethes and Arterioschlerosis.
