He fell in love and married Birdia Blanche "Birdie" Smith near Christmas time in Dec 1896. He worked in various jobs including farming. Their children: Richard Odeal, Lois Mae, Frank L "Doc",Lottie Viola, Reatha Bell, Truett Preston,and Dorothy Elizabeth.
Shortly after Dorothy was born Birdie passed away leaving Sam to care for his children with helpof the family. Some of the family notes are that Sam loved to tell stories especially about people he had met. His favorite thing to do is grab a cup of coffee at the local cafe to share those stories.
Later one of his grandsons, Joseph Preston Slaughter, followed him around. Sam named him "Sambo" and the name stuck.
One of the interesting jobs was working with some of the family on a syrup mill. Several of the grand kids would watch the animals work. Just before Sam passed away, he gave his life to Christ. He was surrounded by family when he went home to the Lord the day after Thanksgiving 28 Nov 1958in Refugio.
