Dies at 77

Funeral service was held for August Zimmerman, 77, in Tilton, Sunday at 1 p.m., conducted by the Rev. A. F. Polk. Burial was in the Montezuma cemetery. The six sons were pallbearers in compliance with a request from their father.

Mr. Zimmerman died December 24 at 6 p.m.

August Zimmerman was born December 17, 1859, at Massenbachhausen, Brackenheim, Württemberg. When 22 years old he sailed for America in 1882 (arriving in New York on 1 August 1882 aboard the ship Neckar), bringing his sister Theresa and (friend) Carolina Hochwarth, whom he married August 4, 1883. They were the parents of 10 children, seven sons and three daughters: Charley of New Sharon, Alber, Joe, and Roy of Keswick, William of Tilton, Gus of Annawan, Ill., Lena Gradert of Annawan, and Mrs. Emma Clark of Deep River. Three have preceded him in death: his wife November 6, 1916, John of Kinross in 1930, and Rose of Geneseo, Ill., in 1935.

October 4, 1925, he was married to Vesta Mefford of Akron, Colo. She and the eight children, 17 grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren survive.

Mr. Zimmerman had been in poor health for the last three years, gradual ly growing weaker.

Attending the funeral from a distance were his sister Mrs. Thresse Dragert, son-in-law Will V. Gradert, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Gradert, Russell, Floyd, and Florence, Gradert, Mrs. Edna Johnson, Jessie Oldaker, and Ward Matzer, all of Geneseo, Ill.; Pauline Franrider, Mrs. Mary Pobanz and daughter Dortha, and Anna Pobanz of Atkinson, Ill.; Mr. and Mrs. Will Gradert, Mr. and Mrs. Guss Zimmerman, Jr., Mr. and Mrs. Joe Frankrider and son Joe, Will Ceils, and Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Gradert of Annawan, Ill.; Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Bickford of What Cheer.

He was born the son of Johannes Zimmermann and Katharine Schwarz in what was then the principality of Württemberg, which became part of the German Empire when unification took place in 1871. He, his sister Theresa Zimmerman and his future wife, Carolina Hochwarth immigrated on the ship Neckar, arriving in New York on 1 August 1882. August married three times. Carolina Hochwarth who preceded him in death, Harriett Henrietta Wainwright whom he divorced, and Vesta Mefford who survived August.
