Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in Company G, 4th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry, on August 17, 1861. Promoted to 1st Lieutenant of Company D in January 1862, at this rank he participated in the Pennisular Campaign, and was captured at the Battle of Gaines Mill. After his exchange he fought in the Battles of Second Bull Run and South Mountain. When Captain Charles Meyer of Company A resigned his commission, Elias Wright was promoted to Captain and commander of the Company on December 13, 1863. He led his unit at the Battle of Chancellorsville, but resigned on June 23, 1863 to accept the appointment as Major of a newly raised Union Colored regiment, the 1st USCT. He would become it's Lieutenant Colonel before he was transferred and promoted to Colonel and commander of the 10th USCT. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on Janaury 156, 1865 in recognition of his war service.
