McIntyre came to the New York State with his family at age 2 from Kenmore, Perthshire, Scotland. He would go on to operate an iron ore mine in North Elba. He also ran lotteries throughout the state and beyond. He served in the New York State Assembly intermittently from 1798 to 1821 and in the New York State Senate from 1822 to 1826. He is best known for his rather lengthy term as New York State Comptroller from 1806 to 1821. During his tenure he was a stuanch ally of Governor and presential candidate DeWitt Clinton. Afterwards he would serve as a presidential elector in 1828 and 1840. Later still he became involved in organizing railroads. The McIntyre Mountains in the Adirondacks are named in his honor.
