Beede was a son of Ivy Kendall Long and Sara Bell (Aitkens) Long. After the death of his mother, Beede and his sister Dora were placed in the Odd Fellows Children's Home in Batesville, Arkansas. He stayed there until he was old enough to graduate.
He was an oil rigger and traveled all over the world. He was survived by two sons, Larry and Jack.

*On some records his birth name is listed as Orville Fletcher and some others as Fletcher Orville.
When he was a young boy, a neighbor offered him a silver coin to change his name to Beede, after the man's last name.
For the rest of his life he went by Beede.
