U.S. Congressman. At the advent of the Civil War, he was a farmer when he enlisted in the Confederate Army and served as a Captain of the 4th Company Sharpshooters, MacRae’s Brigade, Army of Northern Virginia, (1861-65). After the war, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1866 and commenced to practice law in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. He was Mayor of Rocky Mount, in 1867 and a member of the North Carolina State House of Representatives, (1883-85). In 1889, he was elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-first, Fifty-second and Fifty-third Congresses, serving until 1895. After his term, he was Postmaster of Rocky Mount, (1895-97) and practiced law until his death at age 62.
