CARLSBAD — A funeral for John W. Chitwood, 89, of Stand-pipe Road, is scheduled for 2 p.m. today at Denton-Funchess Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Aaron Kayser of First Assembly of God Church, Casa Grande, Ariz., officiating. Interment will follow at Carlsbad Cemetery.

Mr. Chitwood died Monday, Nov. 3, 2003, at home.
John W. Chitwood was born Saturday, Aug. 1, 1914, in Bell-view. He attended school in Ruth.
On July 6, 1933, he married Joyce Neely. IN the 1940s, he played minor league baseball and had been a cowboy in his younger years. He farmed in Broadview until 1956 when he moved to Hobbs and worked for the Lea County Road Department until his retirement at 72 years of age. He moved to Carlsbad in April.
Mr. Chitwood was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; sisters, Iva Vaughn and Edna Rutherford; great-grandsons, Jeremy Rushing and Craig Chitwood; and great-granddaughter, Tiffany Chitwood.
He is survived by a son, Stanley Chitwood and wife, Juanita, of Silver City; a brother, Andrew Chitwood of Clovis; granddaughters, Darlene Rushing and husband, Darrell, of Carlsbad, and Valerie Allen and husband, Ted, of Kirtland; grandsons, Bruce Chitwood and wife, Debbie, of Silver City, and Curtis Chitwood and wife, Shannon, of Carlsbad; and 15 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers are Dustin Chitwood, Eric Chitwood, Brandon Chitwood, Christopher Rushing, Curtis Chitwood and Bruce Chitwood.
