U.S. Congressman. The son of American Colonial immigrants, he was successful in the agricultural business and served as a member of the South Carolina State House of Representatives, (1852-55, 1858-59, 1865-66). In 1870, he contested as a Republican the election of William D. Simpson, was elected to the Forty-first Congress and was reelected to the Forty-second, Forty-third and Forty-fourth Congresses, serving until 1877. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed his agricultural pursuits until his death at age 82.
