U.S. Congressman. Moving to Louisiana in 1843, he engaged in the planting and refining of sugar. Entering politics, he served as a member of the Louisiana State House of Representatives (1854 to 1855). On March 3, 1875, he successfully contested as a Democrat the election of Jacob Hale Sypher to the Forty-third Congress and took his seat on the last day of the session. Lawrence then served for one day in Congress and was not reelected on March 4, 1875. After leaving office, he resumed his agricultural pursuits until his death on his Magnolia Plantation.
