The son of a doctor, and generations of doctors before him, Benjamin did not follow in his forebears' and two older brothers' footsteps to become a physician.
He married Sarah Louise Brower in 1855. According to census records, he was a miller in Oley in 1860, a coal miner in St. Clair in 1870, and a laborer in Reading in 1880. Reading City Directory for 1880 lists him and his son Francis B as millers. His obit indicates that he was much more successful than these occupations would imply.
B Franklin, age 35, married, and a miller in Oley, PA, was "subject to do military duty" in the Civil War Draft Registration of June 1863.
In the 1880s, Franklin and his wife Sarah were members of the Ebenezer Evangelical Church.
At 62, his life was cut short by a tragic accident in the rail yard.
