Kathryn, the daughter of Harlen Gideon and Josephine May Austin, was born in Julesburg, Colorado on June 23, 1914. She had two brothers, Vance and Don Austin. Kathryn attended elementary school, graduated high school - both in Julesburg and went on to obtain a Rural Teaching Certificate at Colorado Teachers College. She frequently substitute taught students during the war until she took a job with Mountain Bell as a telephone operator. Kathryn married Victor Morgan Spears in 1939, a Pharmacist. Kathryn and Victor were well known as the owners of Spears Rexall Drug store in Julesburg. They gave birth to three sons - Larry, Don and David. Victor passed away on January 6, 1982.

Four years after Victor's passing, Kathryn married Harold Michael of Rancho Palos Verdes, California. Harold had two daughters, Sharon Cates and Denise Knox, whom she quickly came to love and adore as her own. They were the daughters she never had. Harold passed away seven years following their marriage. Kathryn was a strong, loving, energetic and sensitive person who touched everyone's lives with passion and compassion. She opened her home to three exchange students; one from Holland, one from Japan and one from Iceland. She loved her family, friends, community and life

Kathryn chose the mortuary in Julesburg for her funeral service because this was her childhood home up until she left for college. The Austin home went on to become the Austin Funeral home a couple of years later. Kathryn is survived by numerous family members, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved her. In lieu of flowers, Kathryn would be pleased with donations to the Sedgwick County Nursing Home - Activities Fund 900 Cedar St. Julesburg, CO 80737. The Family members feel this organization took wonderful care of their Mother. Austin-Tennant Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
