Another Sudden Death
Smith Crane, an old and well known resident of this city, died very suddenly yesterday afternoon at the family home, No. 2022 Halleck avenue. The immediate cause of death is not known, but it is believed his death was due to heart failure.
The deceased arose at his usual hour yesterday morning, and, after eating a hearty breakfast, went to the home of a neighbor to shingle a house. He worked until noon, and returned home for dinner. After eating a light lunch, he got up from the table and complained to his wife of not feeling wel. He sank into a chair and asked for a drink of water, and after imbibing two or three swallows he went upstairs to bed. Mrs. Crane did not think that her husband was dangerously ill, but sent a child for a physician. Mr. Crane had been upstairs but a few minutes when Mrs. Crane heard groans. When she arrived at his bedside he was rolling and tossing as if suffering great internal pain. He died a few minutes later.
Mr. Crane was 57 years of age, and a veteran of the late war, in which he was severely wounded, and he had suffered considerably from his wounds. A post mortem examination will be held to ascertain the cause of death. The deceased was an Odd Fellow and belonged to Kanapolis lodge No. 321, of Kanopolis, Kas. A wife and two grown children survive him. The funeral will take place tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock from the family home. Burial at Woodlawn cemetery.
