He was the only child of Frank "Cowboy" and Vandetta "Babe" Taylor Shafer. He married Iona Mae Wesley Nov. 30, 1961 at the South Union Church in Flat Rock, IL.
Gene served in the U. S. Army from 1961-1964. He was employed at the Heath and Sons Candy Company for 40 years.
His favorite past times were wood working and spending time with his grandchildren.
Gene is survived by his wife; 3 sons, Doug, Rick, and Scott Shafer; 6 grandchildren; and 1 great-granddaughter.
Funeral services with military services were conducted.
