For what it's worth -- Gertrude's birth record & Social Security record show no middle name or initial and with her parents in Censuses, she's enumerated only as Gertrude. However, her 1940 Census enumeration with her husband shows "S. Gertrude," & Alexandria City directories list her as Susie (G. Susie or Susie G.) with husband James Henry Coflin (who worked in a pharmacy). The 1940 census says Mr. Coflin worked in a drug store. I'm thinking "Susie" was a nick name.
