JOHN MAHON FUNERAL FIRST IN 60 YEARS FOR FAMILY
-----
Rites of Well Known Preble Farmer Are Held At Residence.
-----

When the funeral cortege left the "Mahon farm" in the town of Preble this afternoon, bearing the remains of John Mahon, 87, to their resting place in Woodlawn cemetery, it marked the first funeral held from that home during the 60 years it was occupied by Mr. Mahon and his family.

Eighty years ago John Mahon came from England, and as a lad of seven learned the duties of farming in a pioneer world. Sixty years ago, in the house from which he was buried today, he was married and here he reared his family of three sons and three daughters. Shortly after his marriage, he lived for a brief period in an old stone house nearby, which now passes into the hands of other Mahons, his sons.

When the Civil War came an older brother, Jim enlisted and John, 17, remained at home on the farm which he tilled until age intervened and where he lived until death took him Monday noon.

One part of the Mahon farm, a long narrow strip which ran down to the shore of the bay is a private claim which dates back to a patent from the French crown. Another acerage came into the Mahon family in 1832 running from the federal government to John and Morgan I. Martin and then to the Mahons. No additions have been written to that abstract or title since.

The veteran farmer's funeral was largely attended by representatives of old families of the city and countryside, as well as by the aged widow and the six children. The brief service of the Church of England, to which he always adhered, was read by the Very Rev. Mrger NcNurray, rector of Christ Church. Commitment was in the family lot at Woodlawn cemetery. Pall bearers were John Greenwood, George Lucia, George Stordeur, Phil A. Haevers, John Jennings and Carl Moeller.
